CHRIS WILLIAMS' SHORTS

CHRIS WILLIAMS’ SHORTS

These are the shorts worn by Chris Williams, age 8 – 12 during internment in Sumatra from 1942 – 1945 ( Japanese prisoner of war ).  His grandfather was able to look after him at age 11, when Chris was taken from his mother and sister’s camp.

Luckily, his grandfather was in the last camp and made sure he ate.  His grandfather had no sense of smell and ate the rotten food…

Chris’ grandfather mended these shorts.  Latex from the rubber tree was used for mending (Inside right leg) as there was no other mending material available by then.

Loop

The loop inside the back of the shorts was to hang up the shorts overnight on a piece of wire so that the rats wouldn’t eat the bone button.

These shorts were the only clothing Chris had at the end of the war.
